Photography: the art of recording light (1981-)When I first started out, it was with the knowledge that I wanted to do something in the visual field. and until 1980 I mainly worked towards becoming an illustrator. Then at the Maidstone College of Art & Design I came across Jacque Henri Lartigue. That meeting kind of marked the end of my concentration on illustration. Photography was the new love, and to this day, though I mostly work in graphics, I still see myself as a photographer. Through the years I have worked in almost every kind of photography, in and out of the studio; from fashion, editorial, advertising and still-life, to theatre, photojournalism and what is rather strangely called art photography. I suppose by that people try to define straight photography where one attemps to create lasting images from the mundanities of daily life. Whatever you wish to call it, this for me is where photographs truly come into their own. And, had I the luxury, this would be practically the only thing I would do. For this portfolio I've tried to choose a representative, some would say eccentric, selection of work. Route 93 | photography in the United States THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Massive country. I took a journey through some small portion of it back in the dark ages of the Twentieth Century. I went there to look at it as a tourist, and found myself in familiar lands. Everywhere I looked, I recognised something as essentially part of my personal memory. The Portraits: The West: in 2007, 3 in a box design associates published a limited edition book of this work.
